Why do we need Vitamin D supplements?

It is estimated that over 1 billion people in the world have vitamin D deficiency and that over 50% of the world’s population have vitamin D insufficiency. Vitamin D deficiency (and insufficiency) can be easily corrected with a high strength Vitamin D supplement.

In cold climates like the UK most of the population cannot make enough vitamin D to stay healthy. Vitamin D is known as the Sunshine Vitamin because it requires sun exposure for its manufacture. People who live at latitudes above 37 degrees north or below 37 degrees south of the equator don’t get enough UVB energy from the sun to make all the vitamin D they need. The same is true for people who spend most of their time indoors and for those who avoid sunshine and use sunscreens to protect the skin from the harmful effects of ultraviolet radiation. Desk jobs and sunscreen have changed our relationship with vitamin D!

How do we make Vitamin D?

Vitamin D is an essential, fat soluble vitamin that sustains and maintains many aspects of human health. Its absence causes many ailments. Over 90% of our vitamin D is made in the body after sun exposure.

Manufacture of vitamin D requires UVB sun ray exposure at the right index. When your skin is exposed to sunlight, it makes vitamin D from cholesterol. The sun’s ultraviolet B (UVB) rays hit cholesterol in the skin cells, providing the energy for vitamin D synthesis to occur.

In cold climates like the UK when the UVB index is low in the winter months people stop making their own vitamin D. And stores of Vitamin D in the liver only last 1 month so people can become deficient very quickly. Many health advisers advise daily vitamin D supplementation.

Vitamin D deficiency:

Over 1 billion people in the world are thought to have vitamin D deficiency putting their health at risk. Vitamin D deficiency is a huge Public Health Issue worldwide and has become an important part of health management and optimisation in many Governments.

The UK Department of Health advises that all UK residents supplement their vitamin D levels between the months of September and May (autumn and winter months) because this corresponds with the time of year when the body stops being able to manufacture vitamin D. Vitamin D deficiency is associated with higher rates of cancer (especially colorectal, breast pancreatic & prostate), immune disorders, bone disorders and degenerative diseases (including Alzheimers and Multiple Sclerosis).

Symptoms of Vitamin D deficiency:

Some people with Vitamin D deficiency have no symptoms at all. Others have generalised symptoms including

• Tiredness & Fatigue (the commonest symptom)
• Low mood
• Bone aches/pains
• Bone fractures
• Muscle fatigue/ache
• Higher cancer rates (esp colorectal, breast, prostate and pancreatic cancer)
• Joint and bone deformities

People who have a higher requirement for vitamin D include:

• Over 50 years old
• Those with a high BMI (>30)
• Those with darker skin types (pigmentation can reduce vitamin D production in the skin by over 90%)
• Those with kidney/liver disease
• Those with Intestinal disease Eg Chron’s, Coeliac and • Ulcerative Colitis
• Following gastric by pass surgery
• Those who rarely go outside or work indoors a lot
• Those on medications like laxatives, Orlistat (weight loss), steroids, cholesterol lowering drugs and Rifampizin (a TB drug)

How do we diagnose Vitamin D Deficiency?

Your Doctor can diagnose Vitamin D deficiency with a blood test known as 25(OH)D. If your Doctor finds that you are Vitamin D deficient he/she will start you on Vitamin D supplements. Its very hard to manufacture your own Vitamin D in the winter months and it’s almost impossible to raise your levels through Vitamin D rich foods alone. In the absence of Summer Sunshine the best way to treat Vitamin D deficiency is with a good quality supplement.

Should I take Vitamin D2 or D3?

Vitamin D comes in two forms; vitamin D2 (Ergocalciferol) and vitamin D3 (Cholecalciferol). D3 has higher bioavailability meaning that your body can absorb and use it more quickly so your Doctor is more likely to give you D3. If you are vegan your doctor will likely suggest a vegan D2.

Why should I take Vitamin K2?

Vitamin K2 is often missing in the modern western diet with the vast majority of people deficient. Brits no longer eat K2-rich foods like liver, sauerkraut and organ meats. Traditionally, that’s where humans got their Vitamin K2 – animal organs and fermented foods. But nowadays most people view organ meats as exceptions and cultural views on organ meats have changed. Equally fermented foods have also lost their place in our diet.

Vitamin K2 is very important for cardiovascular and arterial health and should always be taken alongside a Vitamin D/Calcium supplement to ensure that any calcium is easily absorbed and reaches the bone mass while preventing arterial calcification. You don’t ever want excess calcium dumped in your delicate coronary arteries.

Vitamin K2 is known to reduce calcium deposits in your arteries (arterial calcification). Coronary artery calcification makes your arteries stiff and less able to expand and contract. This puts you at a higher risk for cardiovascular disease. Coronary artery calcification causes less blood to get to your heart muscle and creates reduces cardiovascular function.

Vitamin K2 also has the benefit of improving collagen elasticity in vessel walls and gives better physiological function of the smooth muscle cells in vessel walls.

The form of Vitamin K2 most effective for cardiovascular health is MK7. We use a stable form of MK7 in this formula.

Why Vitamin D3 with K2 and Calcium?

These micronutrients are good on their own but BETTER together. These nutrients have powerful synergy and should always be taken together for health optimisation. Remember they are good individually but better together. We have done the hard work for you and created what we think is the best Vitamin D supplement on the market.
